A Realistically Chaotic War Film Steven Spielbergs...

‘Saving Private Ryan’ a joint production from Paramount and DreamWorks pictures, directed by the superb Steven Spielberg, was awarded four academy awards for this film alone, in addition to winning an Oscar for best director of the year 1999. The star studded cast including Tom Hanks, as Captain Miller and Matt Damon, as Private Ryan turned out to be one of the best war films ever made. Spielberg’s idea of the movie was to create a chaotic war film that actually made the audience feel they were involved with all the confusion going on during WWII. His words exactly were â€Å"The last thing I wanted to do in this picture was use the war simply as a springboard for action – adventure. I was looking for realism all the time† this quote†¦show more content†¦This shows the audience the setting and its actors (in this case it would be the soldiers and the nationality). A close up of Private Ryan (Matt Damon) is then used in this scene to show the emotion of his feelings as he is walking through the cemetery; Symbolization is used here in a way that Spielberg uses crosses from the cemetery that relate to the iron hedgehogs and the necklace of a cross that symbolises Jesus. These all link and could indicate death. Private Ryan carries on walking until he finds the person he is looking for (Captain Miller- One of the seven soldiers that had saved him). Spielberg uses a tracking shot here, which gives a big impact as when he is walking through it shows hundreds maybe thousands of all the crosses and people who had died. The moment he has reached the objective of finding Captain Miller, the tracking shot is complete and a close up is focused on him. He fell to the floor and a mid shot is filmed when his family come to help him up. Spielberg the zooms in on Private Ryan’s face to create a sad impact of his emotions. This zoom in carries on until it transfers into a scene of the past. Spielberg decided that for this scene he would use a hand held jerky camera which showed a great affect on the audience- it suggested that the audience were actually involved in all the chaos during the battles of the war.
